Do you need a Reamp or is a Passive DI enough

Reamping... any way you want?
Reamping... any way you want?

There's all sorts of arguments on the internet on whether you can use a Passive DI in reverse as a Reamp, or go straight out of your amp or maybe use a special cable?

What IS Reamping? What are these things you do it with? Why do you use them? And can you really do that?

Let's find out with some measurements and then real world tests.

Site Updates

The recent Cubase post took a lot out of me this week for content creation.

So I spend my effort doing a lot of backend improvement. Bugfixes on the site, improved nav-bar, youtube improvements and DAW Chart is improved.

I made a new video for the DAW Chart for people that like videos. The DAW Chart also has price information now and I fixed some ratings that were mildly errant.

IF THE PAGE LOOKS WEIRD THEN DO THIS:

  • Safari - cmd-option-r
  • Chrome - ctrl-F5 (Win) cmd-shift-r (Mac)
  • Firefox - ctrl-F5 (Win) cmd-shift-r (Mac)

I also changed some colours to make the page feel nicer to read.

Knots for Drum Mic Setup - Recorderman, Glyn Johns and Bumblebee methods

Setup
Setup

First you need to check out these articles below...

In the first article I described a NO TAPE way to setup the string/cable/line. This method works perfectly fine for the Recorderman technique and it can be useful for the Glyn Johns technique (even though Glyn himself doesn't mess with strings).

One of my readers asked me to further explain the method I use to measure drum mics without using tape on the drums. This is the response.

Two knots, optionally Three. Very easy, adjustable and non-destructive.

I use paracord for this, which you can get from most home stores. Please do some research and buy some decent quality if you can, it's much more pleasant to use.

Oeksound Spiff Review

Spiff
Spiff

I've recently covered Oeksound Soothe, and now it's time to check out their other product: Spiff.

Unlike Soothe, I'm less skeptical going into this one. I'm also intrigued by the concept of an transient controller. Let's jump in now, once again with a minor aside...

Oeksound Soothe Review

Soothe by Oeksound
Soothe by Oeksound

I'm going to be upfront with you, I was (hint?) not a fan of Soothe since it has been released. Every time somebody asked me about it I was dismissive of it, and sometimes I was downright rude about it.

Despite this I have been constantly asked about my opinions about Soothe. A couple of times a week somebody would ask me, "Is Soothe worth it or is it just a gimmick?"

I have been asked this enough times that I finally contacted oeksound and I asked for an NFR review copy. Here we are now.

Is this thing just a gimmick?

Time to get dirty.

Blue Cat Axiom and Destructor 1.1 Update: IR Loader

IR Loader
IR Loader

Blue Cat recently released Axiom 1.1 and Destructor 1.4, and it came with a feature that I absolutely love: IR Loading.

But don't roll your eyes just yet, this is one of the finest Impulse Response loaders that's inside one of the finest guitar plugins out there

I want to take a few minutes here to show you what it is, and why I think it's so cool.

There's also some other changes, such as the drag-and-drop ability in Axiom. I just really like the new IR Loader, so that's all I'm going to talk about here.

Edit Drums Better with this Trick

Sliced and Stretched
Sliced and Stretched

Editing multitrack drums something that not many people do, but that's what this post is about today.

Actually, scratch that. This is about quantizing any audio in a manner that offers you the best possible sound, but it is most noticeable with drums.

Not only am I going to show you how to do this method manually, but I am going to demonstrate a script that does this for you automatically.

This process will work in nearly any DAW that allows you to stretch or warp audio.

Radial Menu

Ok, I have your attention. It's actually a script, but it's free and it's awesome.

The script is called Radial Menu.

BUT WAIT This is not just another way to mouse around menus. I aim on showing you how this will allow you to utilize key commands in a more structured and easy to remember method.

On with the show...

Text Editor Musings

Debugging
Debugging (VS Code)

This week's post is not a post about music, but instead it's a post about tools that I use to write this music centric website and tools I use to create music software.

I'm talking about a text editor. So in this post I will be discussing my thoughts about text editors, what features I enjoy, what features I do not need and my thoughts about various products on the market currently.

This week's video post is here, it is unrelated to this topic.

Ctags, CSS and SASS/scss

Recently I wanted to setup a program called ctags with css and SASS/scss

This was incredibly frustrating, but with the help of gagbo on #vim I was able to solve the issue.

This is a mid-week post just to help people that have this issue and are googling for it. You will see that this has bearing on the post that will come out this weekend as well.

Top 5 Free Plugins and FreeBees Feature!

First things first, the video is about my top 5 favorite plugins to use in 2018 (not what came out in 2018).

THERE IS MORE THAN THE VIDEO!!

Up in the navbar there's a new feature. I have compiled a list of all of the free (libre and/or gratis) software that I find to be worth downloading.

I've downloaded 100s of plugins and audio softwares, tried them, tested them and wrote notes about them. The result is a list of FREE (libre and/or gratis) plugins that are win64/mac64 and/or Linux capable.

There's no synthedit trash on the list. There isn't dozens upon dozens of win32 plugins that crash, annoy mac users, and make you wish your host had a plugin bridge.

I will be keeping this list up to date as much as I can in the future, and if you have suggestions please let me know. Read the FAQ first so you understand what will even be possible on the list.

P.S. I know I need to improve the navigation bar. It's on my mind. I'm not sure what I want to do yet, but it will get done when I figure out a style that I like.

Reascript tutorial - From total beginner to working GUI-based Script

Lua Code
Lua Code

Today we're going to learn to write ReaScript, specifically Lua.

If you've never programmed in your life, I'm going to try to take you from that point to your very first script with a GUI.

This isn't a super trivial example either! This is a useful script that lets you create sidechaining via automation items.

THIS IS A LOT OF READING!. You do not need to do it all at once. Try it in sections, take a break if you need to, and come back another time. Programming takes time to learn, and time to do. Don't force it all on yourself at once.

I've a video walking you through it as well. Let's get on with it...

My favorite plug-in of 2018 - Earevolve

My favorite plugin of 2018: EARevolve
My favorite plugin of 2018: EARevolve

Originally I wanted to frame this as an objective review, but it became clear as I was writing it is that I simply was being far too positive about this product.

So what I present to you here today is my favorite product of 2018; EARevolve by EAReckon.

I think that many people may not see this as a useful plug-in to have in their arsenal, however this is an incredibly useful plug-in that I think anybody will find to be an invaluable part of their plug-in collection.

Rather than just say all this garbage, how about I try and convince you...

THIS IS A MEDIA HEAVY POST!!!!!!!

Clicking through will load 41.1MB of data.

There are a lot of examples. I've optimized everything as much as reasonable possible, but there is a lot of content here.
